astounding

The true cost of malaria may have been underestimated.

That is very interesting. One red flag tho. Why do they link to Lynn & Vanhanen?

And the anti-vaxxers want to bring back the epidemics. Remarkable. Guess that makes them anti-intelligence - but then, we knew that already.

I’ve often thought the cold Dark Northern Winters accounted for a bit of the achievement of Europe and other countries. What is there to do all winter? If you’ve stored your supplies properly and have enough fire-wood, all that is left is to make babies, drink and THINK.

IIRC Gibbons pushed that as the “Germanic Theory”. Just tells me he didn’t spend much time in Venice.

Except the vast majority of mathematical and philosophical thought came from the Mediterranean regions.

In the 80’s a small NJ town had an unusual number of brain cancers. Many studies and many millions of dollars ruled out all suspected causes. The answer: “This town has an above-average cancer incidence because there is a town somewhere with a below-average cancer incidence.”

Or put on a hat with horns and go bash someone on the head.

Full disclosure: Mr. EmmmieG is about 1/2 Scandinavian, and there is no way he could sit still for an entire winter. He would have to be doing SOMETHING.

You’re saying that the mathematics coming from Europe comes predominantly from Italy, Spain, Greece, and Yugoslavia?

Britain, France, Germany, Poland, Russia, Norway, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria…pikers?

That was largely true up until the 16th century.

Yes, but—-the recent centuries, 17th through 20th, account for most of the progress made in mathematics. There’s just no way to argue, on the basis of all the centuries taken together, that mathematics has been a failure in the north, while thriving in the south.

The Royal Society, and Scientific American, and the authors and referees and editors, have to know that Vanhanen and Lynn are controversial. If they nevertheless permit the works in question to be cited, it would be because in their opinion, those works (putting aside the question of the larger corpus and its political aspects) have scientific merit.

Prior to the invention of techniques that made the fact that they had longer winters negligible? Yes.

What GGT said: “If you’ve stored your supplies properly and have enough fire-wood, all that is left is to make babies, drink and THINK.”

Obviously, that’s not referring to any time post-enlightenment, where there’s a hell of a lot more to do than just that.

Did you miss that bit on what she said, or what?
